Here's my video game woodwind cover of the PMD Opening from Pokmon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity used in Chuggaaconroy's LP of Pokmon Mystery Dungeon DX! I'm Sab and I love saxophone and video games, so now I make covers that combine two of my favorite things!
So happy to finally share this video! Emile approached me back in January about this cover for his Pokmon Mystery Dungeon Let's Play! (which just started go check it out!) I had never played Gates to Infinity, but it was nice to hear some musical continuity across the Pokmon Mystery Dungeon series.
The original is for a full orchestra, so I wanted to incorporate the color and warmth of the strings, but highlight the wind instruments that I play, most of which aren't found in a traditional orchestra haha! I also wanted to have a nod at the original Pokmon Mystery Dungeon at the end by quoting the main theme from the first game. I did it on a whim, but really liked it!
This cover got me to work a lot on mixing! Every cover does as I keep trying to push the orchestrations and styles of each cover. It was a lot of fun to mess around with the different string and percussion VSTs. I learned how to change the mic stuff within the VST and altering the space so things blended a bit more cohesively. I also have been trying to be aware of range and frequency. It's definitely a fine balance to make sure things aren't too muddy from being in a similar range.
A lot of this cover was recorded and filmed before the pandemic as you can tell by the different locations and my different hair color haha! A lot of work went into this cover the past 5 months, and I had so much fun getting to watch it come alive and sending drafts to Emile to get his thoughts.
Hope you enjoy this woodwind cover of the Pokmon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity Opening!
