This debut release from the band Rough Magic on the Chicago label, Lost Objects Records. LO01.
This is the debut release from the band Rough Magic; the ‘solo’ outfit of Donny Mahlmeister. Donny has played with a bunch of other projects over the past 20 years — Early Day Miners, Colossal, A Tundra, Will Phalen, Bora Bora, Judson Claiborne, Collections of Colonies of Bees. Here he’s focusing specifically on honing in his skills as a singer and songwriter, but not necessarily as a ‘singer/songwriter’.
The tracks on the Rough Magic album favor melodic melodies tempered over a bed what could be labeled as ‘post-folk’ or ‘post-country’. The sound has some folk or country elements; finger-picked guitars, some traditional chord structures, but the feel is more taught, akin to something like Television or Elvis Costello. The production captures some of the aesthetic Robert Wyatt in the 80’s or Eno in the late 70’s, as there is also a fair amount of textural synth work. Guitar playing is often at the forefront, with an ode to electric folk-rockers like Richard Thompson and Neil Young.
