Boasting fresher, cleaner production and heavier percussion than their previous effort, as well as a bit of a darker overall tone, Oakland, CA's Golden Drugs are back with a new record jam-packed with their signature technicality and psychedelic sensibilities. Though the sonic mood of this album seems much more sour when compared to their first release, the pacing still manages to be diverse enough throughout so that the somewhat sad mood of the melodies doesn't wear out its welcome too soon. The studio treatment of the percussion this time around is fantastic and really allows what the drummer is doing to properly shine through, bringing them just enough to the fore to be noticeable but not drowning out any of the other instruments or clashing with the record's overall sound. The guitars are atmospheric and hazy, the vocals are chilling and have an almost weirdly choral quality to them, additional instrumentation (like keys, melotron, etc.) works its way into some of the compositions for flavoring, and Golden Drugs remains an intriguing project to follow.
