Persephone [Περσεφόνη. Greek: φέρειν φόνον \"to bring/cause death\"] is the goddess of spring, daughter of Zeus and Demeter. She was carried off against her will by Hades, god of the underworld, and became his wife and queen. Hades gave her gifts and tried to cheer her up, but realizing that she would never be happy in this condition, he proposed a deal. Persephone could spend one part of the year in the lower world, and another with the gods above bringing her power of harvest and growth, which withdraws into the earth at other seasons of the year.
