First of all, MAN this is a hard song to sing. While I'm fiddling with my musicality and vocal work, I wanted to practice this song on a whim and felt like it could work really well as a metal/rock hybrid with all the energy of the pop original and Reel Big Fish's Ska take! I went for a snappier type of guitar tone that would fill out well for the chorus as well!
Now the big thing of course, is how to recreate a song that has one of the most iconic music videos of all time?? I tested ebSynth first to do some AI learning of the hand-drawn sketch but I wasn't very satisfied with the effort it took for a very similar result as regular After Effects. I then moved on, until ActionMovieDad shared a preview of his own take (check out his incredible work if you haven't!) - I was super excited to see a tutorial was in works to achieve this drawn effect with pure AE, but I was way too eager to wait! I ended up using a Boris FX Hand-Drawn effect as a baseline, along with green-screening, keying, and some matte choking, and then Red Giant released a \"Texturize Motion\" plugin! This gives you that very choppy 12FPS animated look, with some overlaid papery folds! However, this took up 32GB+ of my footage quickly leading me to have to render this video in layers very frantically! While it may not be the hi-fi perfection I was inspired by from the original, or even the amazing hand-drawn animation that Thunderesque created for @RichaadEB cover of this song, I feel proud knowing the entire music video has the effect going on!
I know I'm still learning a lot about vocal technique, production, and visual effects, but WHAT a fun journey this video took me in a span of 3-4 months! Stay tuned for more original music, maybe a 90s/00s era song with an equally cool music video, and of course more VGM.
