The String & Return – What Cheer (2005 Anodyne Records ANO-011) The String & Return are sort of Kansas City's answer to June Of 44 or Rumah Sakit, that is they're a math rock group with a very experimental and progressive bend. Also like Rumah Sakit or June Of 44 their members played in/with or went on to form dozens of other groups: guitarist and vocalist Andrew Ashby played with The Caves, drummer Mike Myers played with Biarchy, Everest, Extra Classic, Hundred Years War, In The Pines, Loose Park, Pendergast, Season To Risk, The Life And Times, Wild Chipmunk & The Cuddly Poos, guitarist/keyboardist Wade Williamson played with Contortion Horse, Dirtnap, Olympic Size, Season To Risk, The Stella Link, Thee Water MoccaSins and guitarist Matt Wolber played with Federation Of Horsepower, Hundred Years War, In The Pines.
This album stays on somewhat of a more linear path (with no 10+ min tracks or even 8+ min) than their lengthier first album (I'll be posting that one here too shortly) but that's okay! Even playing this more condensed and less experimental (I'm sure someone was trying to convince them to get \"radio friendly\" or some other fuckshit) style they still end up making absolutely beautiful and, like, perfect post-hardcore/noise rock/math rock. Sort of sounds like cleaned-up Polvo. Reminds me a little of another great KC math group, Shiner. In short it's a great record and you should hear it if you're a fan at all of any of the aforementioned groups or genres. It sounds new but familiar. That's the shit I like.
Audio and scans from my copy
I don't own this, blah blah
No copies available as of posting 1/10/20 but add it to your wantlist and keep an eye out (you can also email me for .zip files of all these albums with the original hq rips and scans, my video editor fucks up the audio and no matter what I've tried I can't fix it. Oh well it's a shit free editor anyway):
