\"Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye\" is a song by Cole Porter, introduced in 1944 in Billy Rose's musical revue, Seven Lively Arts. Notable is Porter's use of word painting; as the lyrics 'from major to minor' are sung, the song literally changes tonality from major to minor.
The song became a jazz standard, recorded by Ella Fitzgerald (Verve Records 1956), and again in 1974 on her live Pablo release Ella in London, as well as Dinah Washington John Coltrane, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan, Ray Charles, Carly Simon, Rod Stewart, Simply Red, Robbie Williams, Chet Baker, Eden Brent, and Diana Krall.
