The musician Pauline Oliveros has developed a strategy she refers to as 'deep listening' which is a way of using sound as a source of meditation. Part of the structure of this concept of deep listening is a distinction between 'focal listening' and 'global listening' in which the former represents a centred, located sense, whilst the latter is a way of listening which is distributed across the aural environment and not specifically located within the intentionality of the listener. This distinction is drawn symbolically using the image of the circle with a dot in the centre.
